Andres Iniesta on Barcelona future: 'I am not saying if I am going to renew or not'
[ad_1]
Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta has once again refused to rule out leaving the club when his contract expires next summer but if he does it won't be on bad terms.
Iniesta, 33, is entering the final year of his contract and has said throughout the last few months that he is in no rush to sit down and agree a renewal.
It's led to speculation that he could leave Camp Nou in 2018 and this week he was linked with a move to Juventus, who have benefitted from signing experienced players like Andrea Pirlo and Dani Alves in recent years.
"My intention is, at least, to finish the contract that I have and that's what I want to do," Iniesta, who has been at Barca for 21 years, told RAC1.
"Beyond that, there are always possibilities. It's a question of assessing everything. I am not saying if I am going to renew or not.
"I've reached this situation conditioned by how the season has gone, how things have moved and I have learned to assess things.
"I already said a few weeks ago that the moment I have to leave [Barca], it will not end in confrontation between Iniesta and the club. We will always look for what is best for everyone."
Doubts about Iniesta's long-term future first came about in March when he said he would not stay at Barcelona just for the sake of it and would consider leaving if he no longer felt important to the first team.
The Spain international has been an ever-present in Luis Enrique's side for the big games this season but has been increasingly left out at other times.
On top of that his form has suffered due to a number of injury problems and he ended the campaign having started just 13 La Liga games.
By the end of next season he will be 34 and whether he stays at the club beyond the end of his contract may be conditioned by how often he plays and what his role is under Luis Enrique's successor, who is reported to be Ernesto Valverde.
Iniesta is closing in on 700 career appearances and many have tipped him to retire at Barca, where he has amassed a staggering 28 trophies.
However, the same was said of former teammate Xavi Hernandez, who left the club for Qatar in 2015 at the age of 35 having become a bit-part player in Luis Enrique's team following the signing of Ivan Rakitic.

Barcelona's Aleix Vidal returns to training following ankle injury
[ad_1]
Barcelona full-back Aleix Vidal has returned to training two months earlier than expected ahead of Saturday's Copa del Rey final against Alaves.
Vidal, 27, dislocated his right ankle in a league match against Alaves in February and had to have an operation in Vitoria before being able to return to Barcelona.
The club confirmed at the time that he was expected to be out for five months, effectively ending his season.
However, the former Sevilla player is ahead of schedule on his recovery and has been training on his own for the last few weeks.
On Wednesday, as Barca's players returned from two days off having missed out on the league title to Real Madrid, Vidal was then able to take part in full training for the first time since injuring his ankle.
It's unlikely he will be able to feature against Alaves at the Vicente Calderon this weekend but Luis Enrique will not rush into making a decision either way.
In normal circumstances there would be no decision to make, but with first-choice right-back Sergi Roberto suspended, Barca have no natural replacement.
Vidal's injury came just when he had begun to feature in Luis Enrique's side on a regular basis for the first time since joining the club in 2015.
Impressive performances in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey saw him regain his place in the team following months of speculation about his future.
Since the injury, though, he has once again been the focus of rumours about a move away from Camp Nou, with reports this week suggesting AC Milan are among the clubs interested in him.
Barca will not make any decisions on players until after the Copa del Rey final, though, with the new manager set to have the final say on any outgoings.
President Josep Maria Bartomeu has confirmed Luis Enrique's successor will be named on May 29 and Ernesto Valverde is the clear favourite to take over.
Athletic Bilbao confirmed Valverde will not renew his contract with the club, but speaking on Wednesday the 53-year-old said he couldn't confirm Barca's interest.

Ernesto Valverde 'cannot confirm' Barcelona interest as he leaves Athletic Bilbao
[ad_1]
Ernesto Valverde has said he "cannot confirm" reports that he will become the next coach of Barcelona.
Less than 24 hours after Athletic Bilbao announced that Valverde would not continue for a fifth season in charge, the 53-year-old sat alongside Athletic president Josu Orrutia to explain his decision to leave.
Asked about Barcelona's reported interest in signing him, he said: "I cannot confirm it, I'm sorry."
Valverde is reported to be the leading candidate to succeed Luis Enrique after the Barca coach's decision to leave.
He said: "There is a lot of speculation regarding my future but, I have to say it clearly, I haven't committed myself to any team. I haven't spoken to any club.
"I do have an agent, and there are clubs that are interested in me. But this is my club, it was my duty to first say farewell to it before I go and consider something else."
Valverde, who played for Barcelona from 1988 until 1990, added that he would "evaluate my situation as soon as I walk out of this door."
He indicated that major clubs were interested, saying: "This is not the first time I've had offers from big clubs, our president knows that."
The coach said he had made his decision to leave Bilbao last year, saying: "When I first came here I thought I would only remain for two years.
"Four years later, I've realised that I've spent double the time I thought I would. It's a hard day for me [to leave], all that I've experienced here is incredible.
"But the decision to leave was taken a while back."
Valverde began his second spell in charge of Bilbao in 2013, and in 2015 led them to their first major trophy in more than three decades with a Spanish Super Cup victory over Barcelona.
Athletic finished seventh in La Liga this season and will play in next season's Europa League qualifying round if Barcelona beat Alaves in Saturday's Copa del Rey final.
"I feel my work here is done," Valverde said. "I think it's good to have movement in football, for someone new to come along and have fresh ideas."
He indicated that he could opt to take a sabbatical, adding: "Why not? I can do what I want."
Urrutia praised Valverde's work as "outstanding" and added: "His behaviour has been exemplary and I have to thank him for that."

Uruguay news conference: Suarez says he wants to leave Liverpool
[ad_1]
Speaking at a Uruguay news conference Thursday night, Luis Suarez has confirmed he wants to leave Liverpool and revealed his reasons why. Uruguay news conference 31/05/2013 Luis Suarez interview. Liverpool striker Luis Suarez says now would be a good time to move, but has made no decision on his future.
The 26-year-old, who is serving a ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, admitted on Wednesday it “would be difficult to say no” to Real Madrid, who have been linked with him.
On Thursday he said: “It’s a good moment for a change of environment because of all I’ve been through.” He added: “I do not know when I’m going and I do not know if I’m staying.”
The striker was speaking at a news conference in his homeland ahead of Uruguay’s friendly with France in Montevideo on 5 June.
Suarez, who was banned for eight games for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in 2011, added: “I have only words of thanks to the club, the fans of Liverpool.
“But the treatment I received from the rest of England in recent weeks has been tough.
“It [Liverpool] is a spectacular club, but they are aware of the way that the press treats me.” Suarez joined Liverpool in a £22.7m deal from Ajax in 2011.
He scored 30 goals last season but missed the final two games of the campaign after being found guilty of violent conduct for biting Ivanovic in April.
Suarez has rejected reports in Spain that he has begun talks with Real but has reiterated his interest in a move to the Bernabeu.
He said: “It is normal that it is impossible to say no to big teams for which one always dreams. Yet I have nothing, I have not spoken with Real Madrid nor with Liverpool.
“My agent has not told me anything either and that leaves me alone, but they [the media] are speculating.
“Every time you do something it becomes big. I just said I’m very happy at Liverpool and I’ll be forever grateful to this great city and this club made me grow so much, where I still have a contract.”
Las Palmas begin attempts to keep PSG's Jese Rodriguez on loan
[ad_1]
Las Palmas have begun talks to keep on-loan forward Jese Rodriguez for next season, president Miguel Angel Ramirez has told Marca.
Paris Saint-Germain's Jese has spent the last five months at Las Palmas, scoring three goals in 16 league appearances.
"We want to keep him. We have begun negotiations but his wages are very high," Ramirez said.
Jese joined PSG from Real Madrid last summer and returned to Spain on loan in January after protracted talks between Las Palmas and the Ligue 1 giants.
"It was more difficult for us to bring Jese back in January than it is now," Ramirez said.
"Things are now different with PSG, and if Jese leaves Paris we will be there as a great alternative."
Jese, who has made only one league start at PSG, took a huge pay cut to join Las Palmas earlier this year and has said he wants to stay with them next season.
"Next season would be different," the 24-year-old said. "It's not the same to join a team in preseason than midway through a campaign. I'm certain I would do a better job."

Malaga braced for Sandro sale amid Liverpool and Tottenham links
[ad_1]
Malaga coach Michel will not be surprised if a club pays the €6 million release clause to acquire the team's top scorer Sandro because he says it is a "bargain" price for a striker that had a very impressive campaign.
Under contract with the Andalusian outfit for another two seasons, the player has attracted the attention of numerous clubs because of the amount of money that would have to be spent to get him.
"We understand that right now he is a player that has an advantage to play in a top club, because if you look at price and performance, he is a bargain for any [club]," Michel told AS.
"Goal scorers cost much more in the transfer market than what clubs would have to pay for Sandro right now."
Sandro is a reported target of Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Villarreal, Everton, Tottenham and Liverpool.
La Vanguardia newspaper reports Sandro's agent, Gines Carvajal, was spotted at the Vicente Calderon stadium earlier this week to discuss the player's possible move to Atletico this summer.
"I'm not surprised that the are many teams that want him and are monitoring him," Michel said. "He is a player that everyone wants to sign.
"He's been sensational, he's had a great season."
The Spain under-21 forward scored 14 goals in 21 league appearances after joining Malaga last summer following his release from Barcelona.
Michel knows it will be tough to keep hold of the 21-year-old.
"It was a great move by [Malaga sporting director Francesc] Arnau to sign Sandro," Michel said. "He is a key player and we are waiting to see what happens because that will mark our planning. "We know what the transfer market is like and you have to wait.
"What happens to clubs like us is that you hope your good players will not leave."
Malaga have not given up hope of keeping Sandro for another season.
Club sporting director Arnau said on Tuesday that Malaga has offered Sandro a new and improved contract but the player has yet to make a decision on his future.
Arnau said: "There are many situations that don't depend on us. We shall see what happens. Our premise is to try to keep Sandro here next year. We will fight as much as we can so that he stays here. The fans have shown him a lot of affection and we have to make a financial effort so that he can remain with us."
